TaylorMade Golf ended the business cycle for the 2019 line of P790s in 2021 after it launched the newest generation of P790s. However, TaylorMade gave only a few details about the 2021 model before it was manufactured. Information was limited to a blackened image and a spec sheet. That was all.

The most passionate golfers of TaylorMade and the P790 line took out their credit cards and began placing orders. So, without knowing, they were buying the new TaylorMade with a lot of faith, and they took a risk. It’s not too late, however. This TaylorMade P790 irons review will analyze the iron from the design and construction to performance, feel, weights, and who it’s suitable for.

TaylorMade P790 Irons Review

In this review, we’ll look at all that is involved in the making of this iron set and what you should expect from it.

Design and Construction

TaylorMade P790 Irons Review: What Should You Expect from This Set?

Being a pioneer in the category of distance irons for good players, the P 790 is built based on elegance and performance. The P790 now has a new SpeedFoam. This is an ultralight foam made with urethane and is infused in its forged and hollow body design. It is 69 percent less dense than the irons of the previous generation.

Switching to SpeedFoam Air Trusted Source Inside P•790 | What is SpeedFoam Air & How Does it Work? | TaylorMade Golf We take you inside the all-new P•790 irons from TaylorMade to discover how SpeedFoam™ Air fuels next gen performance. www.taylormadegolf.com provides a significant weight saving, averaging 3.5 grams in their respective irons. This allows for better repositioning mass to a lower Center of Gravity location and improves launch properties.

The irons are made to look and sound like blade irons, but they aren’t. But if you want a blade iron set, check out our review of the best blade irons.

The irons have a redesigned Forged Hollow Body. This is combined with a 1.5 mm 4140 steel that is forged to promote flexibility, get more distance, and fast ball speeds.

The irons feature the Thru-Slot Speed Pocket that continues to provide greater flexibility across the face.

Overall Performance

The TaylorMade P790 irons are more forgiving player distance irons. Built for speed and long distance, they are more reliable and will give you that extra 10 yards consistently.

They have been named P790 for their 79 mm blade size, which is thicker than the regular irons on the market.

The use of a thinner, flexible face has increased ball speed. The new speed pocket is present in the iron sole, which helps increase ball speed.

The MOI is now improved through the use of high-density tungsten weighting. It is one of those irons through which golfers get the optimal shot, with great forgiveness, better aesthetics, longer irons, high speed, and greater distance. It allows various golfer levels to share the same club carried by the best golfers on the course.

Weight

Inside the 2021 P790 Iron is over 31 grams of tungsten. This is higher than the previous model’s 13.5 grams. And while that doesn’t put TaylorMade anywhere near being able to claim the number one use of tungsten in golf on a percentage basis, it’s a massive leap from the previous generation.

The tungsten weight sits low and slightly towards the feet. It reduces weight for more launch (and less spin) than the 2019 model.

It also pushes the center of gravity towards the nose, where it works in conjunction with other aspects of the P790’s design (such as TaylorMade’s inverted cone technology Trusted Source What’s Up With Taylor Made’s Inverted Cone Technology? | Golf-Patents.com Most golf equipment buffs will know of Taylor Made’s Inverted Cone Technology. The skeptics have probably wondered whether it is all marketing hype or real technology. The inverted cone technology is a specific variation of face thickness covered by no less than three utility patent; USPN 6800038, USPN 6824475, and USPN 7066832. The ‘475 patent describes the invention as… golf-patents.com and the 1.5mm (at its thinnest) 4140 forged L-face) to increase the size of the space of the optimum point of impact.

Trajectory

The head design of the irons promotes low-spin shots with a penetrating trajectory and is designed for golfers seeking control without sacrificing distance. It has the intelligent sweet spot that offers precise performance where golfers need it most.

With the P 790 UDI, you’ll have a low rotation rate and a penetrating trajectory! Complementing the P790 irons, the new P-790 UDI, a forged utility iron, is designed with a shape inspired by those found in the pros’ bags on the Tour.

These irons incorporate proven TaylorMade technologies such as the Thru-Slot Speed Pocket and Forged Hollow Body Construction with a new thin-walled design.

They feature the same “intelligent” sweet spot repositioned based on what engineers have observed by analyzing thousands of shots. The head design promotes low spin rate shots with a penetrating trajectory.

Forgiveness

TaylorMade P790 Irons Review: What Should You Expect from This Set?

The P790 is designed in such a way that it offers excellent forgiveness.  The iron offers more tolerance to mishits through the use of the SpeedFoam technology with the forged construction.

Golfers experience tolerance like in no other iron in the same price range. It’s the only reason so many pro golfers like the TaylorMade P790 irons.

Distance

The TaylorMade P790 irons are some of the fastest irons in golf. Their ball speed provides additional distance over previous versions with the same speed as the clubhead. However, the P970 has been designed to improve the ball speed it offers while maintaining the correct forgiveness, feel, and distance of the P790 irons. Reviewing the ball speed of various irons suggests that these irons are on the high side of the continuum. It’s one of the reasons many golfers, including amateurs, like the P790 irons.

Feel and Sound

The technology applied to the engineering of the TaylorMade irons offers it a better feel than most others. This also gives its users aesthetic design benefits.

The irons have a forged construction made of soft materials, which offer a better feel. These urethane materials also help provide muted sound, which golfers prefer.

Durability and Warranty

The P790s are crafted and cast from 8620 carbon steel, making it one of the strongest and most durable irons. Perhaps this is why TaylorMade provides it with two years of warranty as it is so sure of its durability. Most brands offer a one-year warranty for their iron sets.

Price

The golf iron set comes in a not-too-high price range when considering its newly developed features. It is currently retailing for less than $1,500 for a set of seven. This may seem at the higher side of the range for golf irons, but the value for money is great. It’s not the kind of kit you’d find in the list of the best irons under $500, but you may check them out if that’s where your budget lies.

What’s Included in the Set

The TaylorMade P790 is available from 4 to PW / AW and comes with a True Temper Dynamic Gold or an MMT graphite steel shaft. It also comes with GolfPride Z-Grips for both right and left handed. The line also has one of the best 2 irons in the form of the P790 UDI, which is as a 2 iron (17 degree) and is equipped with the innovative Project X HZRDS shaft as well as the Golf Pride Z-Grip. This redesigned forged hollow body construction pairs with a responsive 1.5mm forged 4140 steel L face to promote maximum flexibility, fast ball speeds, and distance while maintaining a high-quality forged feel.

Key Features:

  1. SpeedFoam Air

Within the clubhead cavity, SpeedFoam provides support and sound damping properties to the face, making the P790’s performance far superior to that offered by other irons in the TaylorMade family. It is 69% less dense than the previous generation of P790s.

  1. 8620 carbon steel body

The irons are made of a soft 8620 carbon steel body combined with a high strength forged 4140 carbon steel face. These result in a super strong and durable construction.

  1. Inverted Cone Technology

The P790s feature an ultra-thin 1.75mm face with new Inverted Cone Technology, optimized for the slightly reduced surface area of the face. The new Inverted Cone reduces the thickness of the edges of the face and increases the flexibility from the heel to the toe, thus maximizing the ball speed over the entire impact surface.

  1. Speed Pocket cavity

The integration of the new face design introduces a Speed Pocket cavity in the sole that offers extreme flexibility in the lower part of the face. This creates greater tolerance and regularity, with characteristics usually found in irons designed to maximize distance.

  1. Tungsten infused weight

To ensure tolerance and modularity, the P790 irons feature a tungsten weight made by metal injection molding (MIM) for precise center of gravity positioning and a higher moment of inertia (MOI).

PROS CONS

  • Integrated with the latest advanced technology
  • More tolerant and forgiving
  • Great ball speed
  • Made from high-strength 8620 carbon steel for durability
  • The price is on the higher side

Who Is It For?

The P790 from TaylorMade is designed for those who want a game improvement and player’s distance iron in one. It’s designed for everyone, from +4 to 24 handicappers.

They have been designed and manufactured in such a way as to offer complete packages, which is suitable as game-improving irons and for players. It’s one of the reasons golfers of all categories love the p790 irons.

The TaylorMade P790 handicap range is low to medium-high. Golfers with a mid-range handicap rating can use P790 to manage their game better.

2021 TaylorMade P790 vs. Previous P790 Sets

Originally, the P-790s were designed with two strong guiding ideas: performance and elegance. They deliver distance, power, and feel in a package that has appealed to many players.

So to improve one of the best series of irons in recent years, TaylorMade engineers started redesigning the technology which lies at the heart of this set – the SpeedFoam Air. This is a light foam carefully placed in the hollow forged body.

Now, the P790 is 69 percent less in density than the previous generation. Switching to SpeedFoam Air represents a significant weight saving. This, therefore, allows the redistribution of weight to a lower gravity center placement and improves launch properties. Additionally, it has resulted in a thinner face of the P-790 and an enlarged sweet spot for more forgiveness.

Conclusion

Golfers who have purchased them are lucky to have one of the best iron sets with modern technology. The irons offer a game enhancement for new and experienced golfers by allowing them to reach longer distances.

As our TaylorMade P790 irons review has shown, the irons come with the latest technologies such as tungsten weighting, inverted cone technology (ICT), and speed foam construction. It is ideal for players who are mid-level handicaps. It’s also ideal for those who need a light forgiving iron with a large sweet spot.
